Keep Gwent in New Welsh Police Force
Gwent should stay as a distinct unit in any new
Welsh Police Force, Torfaen MP Paul Murphy told the House of Commons
today.
Speaking in the debate on the Terrorism Bill, Mr Murphy,
who recently became Chair of Parliament’s Intelligence and Security
Committee, said that the expertise, accountability and good community
policing in Gwent should be retained in any restructuring of policing
in Wales.
The former Northern Ireland and Welsh Secretary said that the new terrorist
challenges facing us all meant that there was a need for larger police
forces, and that a Welsh force seemed to be a sensible option. He also
said that the new force should remain accountable to the Home Secretary,
but would have a very close working relationship with the National Assembly.
