MP Supports Carers Week

Paul Murphy has voiced his support for Carers’ Week, which is taking place between June 13th and 19th. He has signed a Commons motion on Carers’ Week, praising the role that carers play in society and calls for increased recognition and improved support from the Government.

Paul Murphy said; “There are thousands of people in Torfaen who provide unpaid help and support to relatives or friends who are ill, frail of have a disability. The care they provide is vital, both to those who need looking after and to our society as a whole. Estimates say that carers save the country £57 billion every year.”

“As someone who cared for my own father when he became ill, I know that it is not at all easy to balance your work and your own life with the demands of caring for a friend or family member. The people who meet that challenge week in, week out are local heroes and deserve every bit of recognition and support. I therefore welcome the Government’s announcement that they will be extending flexible working rights to carers.”

“The challenge for us as politicians is to listen to carers during Carers’ Week, find out what additional help carers feel most in need of and then do everything we can to put in place the best possible system of support.”

Paul would welcome any suggestions from carers about what should be done to support them. If you receive any suggestions, please pass them on to our office at 73 Upper Trosnant Street, Pontypool, Torfaen, NP4 8AU or hunta@parliament.uk

Paul signed EDM8 on Carers’ Week:
“That this House expresses its appreciation of the six million people in the UK who provide unpaid help and support to a relative, friend or partner who could not otherwise manage because they are ill, frail or have a disability; welcomes the unique partnership of seven national charities, Carers UK, Crossroads Caring for Carers, Help the Aged, Macmillan Cancer Relief, MS Society, Rethink and The Princess Royal Trust for Carers who together organise Carers Week; congratulates the many employers who already have flexible working practices; encourages other employers to support their staff who juggle work and care; notes that carers currently save the Exchequer £57 billion every year; and calls for the provision of better support and services for carers.”
