Murphy appointed Chair of Intelligence and Security Committee

Torfaen MP Paul Murphy has this week been appointed Chair of Parliament’s Intelligence and Security Committee by the Prime Minister.

The Committee oversees and scrutinises the expenditure, administration and policy of Britain’s Intelligence and Security Services – the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6), GCHQ and the Security Service (MI5). It was established by the Intelligence Services Act 1994 and operates within the ‘ring of secrecy’, giving it access to a wide range of highly classified information. The appointment of the Chair is made by the Prime Minister, after consultation with the Leader of the Opposition.

The Committee gives a report to the Prime Minister on its work each year. These reports are then placed before Parliament. The Committee also provides other reports on intelligence and security issues from time to time.

After his appointment, Paul Murphy said: “It is a great honour to be given this most important job. I look forward to working productively with my Parliamentary colleagues at a time when issues of national security are obviously very important to everyone.”
