My Memories of Mo, by Paul Murphy MP
My memories of Mo are those of a very dear friend.
We entered the House of Commons together in 1987, and worked with each
other as Ministers in Northern Ireland. I was Mo’s deputy at the time
of the Good Friday Agreement, and I know that we could never have achieved
that historic breakthrough without her.
Mo’s warmth, honesty, straightforwardness and her
considerable political skill changed the face of Northern Ireland politics
for ever. She was also great to work for.
Mo always said that the peace process was brought about by hundreds
- if not thousands – of people of all faiths, parties and backgrounds.
She was right, of course, but let no one under-estimate Mo’s own unique
contribution. The change in the lives and destinies of all the people
of Northern Ireland is the best memorial Mo could ever have wanted.
