Attacks on Nurses unacceptable, says Paul Murphy
Torfaen MP Paul Murphy this week put down a motion
in Parliament, after a survey showed that 40% of nurses have been
attacked or abused at work in the last year. The motion condemns attacks
on nurses and calls for stiff penalties for those found to have abused
nursing staff.
Paul Murphy said: “It is important as an MP that I
send a message that abusing or attacking nursing staff is simply unacceptable.
Hopefully, as many MPs as possible will send that message by signing
my motion. That would send a message loud and clear from Parliament
in support of nurses and their Unions in their fight to address this
issue.”
“Nurses should be allowed to get on with their jobs without the fear
of being attacked. Many local people work in surgeries and hospitals.
They do a vital job, which can often be very busy and stressful. It
is my job as their MP to stand up for their right to work in as safe
an environment as possible.”

Abuse of NHS Staff
That this house notes with concern the results of a recent RCN survey
that shows that 40% of nurses have been attacked or harassed at
work in the past year; recognises the distress that such threats, verbal
abuse and physical attacks on nursing staff can cause to nurses already
facing the pressures of a challenging profession; commends nurses and
other healthcare professionals on the tremendous contribution that they
make to our NHS; and supports measures to deal with those who harass,
abuse or attack hospital staff using the full available force of the
law.
