Murphy in Call for Valleys Minister
Former Secretary of State for Wales Paul Murphy
has today spoken about Labour’s huge debt to Valleys communities, and
urged the Assembly to appoint a Minister with special responsibility
for the Valleys.
Speaking in the Welsh Grand Committee, the Torfaen
MP said: “The Valleys are a unique and important part of our nation.
Without Valleys people, there would have been no Assembly, and no Labour
Administration in Cardiff.”
“I am proud of Labour’s record of delivery for communities like mine.
Despite the difficulties caused by the decline of traditional employers,
unemployment is 31% lower than in 1997. However, we still need to
do more to tackle disadvantage and improve services in our Valley constituencies,
especially in communities at the Heads of the Valleys.”
“Personally, I think it may be time to consider appointing a Minister
for the Valleys, or a Minister with special responsibilities for the
Valleys, to lead our efforts to deliver for our communities.”
