Paul Murphy MP Backs Climate Change Petition

Local MP Paul Murphy has this week met with Torfaen’s local Friends of the Earth group, who presented him a petition calling for action to tackle climate change. The group are calling for a Climate Change Bill, in order to strengthen efforts to cut carbon dioxide emissions.

After listening to the group’s concerns and receiving the petition, Paul Murphy said: “I understand the group’s calls to make tackling climate change a top priority. I have already signed a House of Commons motion calling for a Climate Change Bill, something I hope to see the Government put forward. I will now send David Milliband, the Secretary of State for the Environment, a copy of the petition to show him the views of many local people, including myself.”

Bleddyn Lake, spokesperson for Torfaen Friends of the Earth said:
“Climate change is one of the biggest threats we face however we do have the means to tackle it. A climate law will give Government and business the framework they need to put the solutions to climate change into practice. The cuts in carbon dioxide emissions which are needed can be achieved through a range a measures such as encouraging energy efficiency and promoting renewable energy supplies. With the valuable support of Paul Murphy and the 400 other MPs who are backing Friends of the Earth’s Big Ask climate campaign, we are a step closer to getting this law introduced.”

Text of Climate Change petition from Friends of the Earth Cymru

“We, the undersigned, are calling on you to put climate change at the top of your agenda for the next five years. The largest political parties have all said they will cut carbon dioxide emissions by at least 60% by 2050. Yet emissions are rising not falling.
We need a legal framework for year – on year – cuts in carbon dioxide of 3% per year to make every Government do their bit to meet the 2050 targets.”

CLIMATE CHANGE EDM 178:

That this House agrees with the Government's Chief Scientific Adviser that climate change is a threat to civilisation; welcomes the cross-party agreement in favour of major cuts in greenhouse gas emissions, and particularly in carbon dioxide emissions, by 2050; believes that such a long-term target will best be met through a series of more regular milestones; and therefore notes the Climate Change Bill that was presented by a cross-party group of honourable Members in the final days before the General Election, and hopes that such a Bill will be brought forward in this Parliament so that annual cuts in carbon dioxide emissions of 3 per cent. can be delivered in a framework that includes regular reporting and new scrutiny and corrective processes.
