Early Day Motions

An update from Paul Murphy MP

Early Day Motions (EDMs for short) are statements of opinion tabled by MPs, that other MPs can sign up to to show their support. EDMs can voice the views of individual MPs, draw attention to specific events or campaigns, demonstrate the extent of parliamentary support for a particular cause or point of view or call for the government to take action on an issue.

While they can't force action, EDMs can form an important part of campaigns that lead to changes in the law or action on issues - examples of recent EDMs that gathered support and led to Government action include the EDM calling for a new Climate Change Bill.
