Paul Murphy starts Blaensychan Storywalk

Torfaen MP Paul Murphy has today ‘cut the ribbon’ at the inaugural Blaensychan Storywalk.

Speaking to those involved in setting up the walk, including young people from The Learning Zone, Paul Murphy said: “It has been a privilege to be asked to start the inaugural Blaensychan storywalk. All credit goes to the young people and those at HyperAction and Torfaen Council who have helped.”

“My family connections to the area make it very special for me to be able to come up here and walk around, but I’d recommend it to anyone. The walk is a great way of learning about the industrial heritage of Blaensychan, and getting some spectacular views over the valley, which has changed so much over the years. All of that, and it’s good exercise!”

The Blaensychan storywalk runs through the valley, telling the story of the area’s industrial heritage - the route runs past the sites of the old Blaensychan and Llanerch Collieries. There are also fantastic views to be seen over the valley and down towards Pontypool.

Anyone wanting to do the walk, or those who just want to find out more, can download the ‘story files’ – an audio file that guides you around the route and tells the story of the local area. Go to www.storywalks.org.uk to find out more
