United Voice on Cwmbran Prison
Torfaen MP Paul Murphy has this week spoken with First Minister Rhodri Morgan, to emphasise the united voice locally against the building of a prison in Cwmbran.
Paul Murphy said: “I remain concerned that the site suggested, which is surrounded by some of the most tightly-packed housing in Wales, just isn’t right for a prison. I have spoken with Rhodri Morgan and have relayed the views of our AM Lynne Neagle, Torfaen Council Leader Bob Wellington and local residents in the area.”
“Rhodri has again emphasised that both he and the Welsh Assembly Government believe that a Heads of the Valleys site would be a preferable option for South Wales, rather than Cwmbran”
The site of the old Police Training College in St. Dials is one of four sites shortlisted by the Ministry of Justice for the building of a new prison for Wales. But ever since the shortlist was released, The Argus and local politicians have expressed their concerns about the suitability of the site.
