Murphy praises work of Community Councils
Torfaen MP Paul Murphy has today launched a strong defence of the role of Torfaen’s Community Councils.
Speaking at the launch of a Charter aiming to build on the co-operation between Torfaen Council and the six Community Councils in the area, Paul Murphy said: “Community Councils play a vital role of life in Torfaen, and help enhance to quality of local peoples’ lives. They can work in partnership with Torfaen Council to improve our public services and their local environment.”
“I would say that they complement the work of the Local Authority, not duplicate it. I have seen them play a valuable role in developing a sense of community in their areas, building a local identity and providing a voice for their town or village. In my constituency, Blaenavon, Pontypool, Cwmbran and Henllys would all be much the poorer without their community councils to fight their corner.”
“I’m glad to see that it’s our area that is being heralded as an example of how the system should work. The work of local community Councillors should be praised, not disparaged - especially as they are unpaid volunteers.”
