Reassured by Justice Minister Statement on Prison
Paul Murphy has welcomed the latest news from UK Justice Minister Maria Eagle that the Ministry for Justice is still seeking a new prison site in North Wales rather than Cwmbran.
Speaking from the Commons today, Mr Murphy said:
“I welcome the fact that Justice Minister Maria Eagle has reaffirmed that she is looking for a suitable site for a prison in North Wales. This follows on from the reassurance that I had following the announcement last month that it would not be located in Caernarfon.
“For well over two years now I have fought strongly against a prison being located at the police training college site in St Dials. The Argus, local politicians, our Assembly member and residents were united in the belief that the site is just not suitable for a prison. It is one of the densest areas of housing in Wales.”
During the long campaign, Mr Murphy held public meetings, listened to families concerned by the plans, met with the Prisons Minister on a number of occasions and strongly supported the passionate Argus campaign. The Torfaen MP also asked a Parliamentary Question last month to Justice Secretary Jack Straw on the plans for the former Police Training College site.
