Paul Murphy's reaction to news on Abersychan Library

Paul Murphy MP has reacted to the news that Abersychan Library is to be closed.

The Torfaen MP said: "I am disappointed about the decision, although as I said, I appreciate that it has not been taken lightly."

"I have spoken with the Council Executive Member to seek assurances about library and IT services for residents in the Abersychan area. I will now seek a meeting with the Council, and I have also agreed to visit Library staff to discuss the way forward with them. It is vital that this closure does not prevent local people being able to access books and computer facilities."

Before the decision was taken, Mr Murphy had issued a statement asking the Council to think again about the closure plans. Speaking to The Free Press, he said: “I would ask the Council to take another look at the future of Abersychan Library.”

“I understand that money is tight and that these proposals have not been made lightly. However, a close look needs to be taken to see what can be done to preserve library services in the area before any proposals go ahead. As The Free Press pointed out, perhaps this could involve harnessing some of the enthusiasm of the local community to help provide a service or boost income.”

“Abersychan Library is where I went as a child to read books. It is where I discovered my love of history – something that took me to Oxford University and then to my job as a teacher and lecturer in Ebbw Vale.”

“I know that the world has changed since then, but libraries are still important for places, especially for young children. Of course, they can also be a great place for people without computers to access information and services on the internet. I hope that there is an opportunity to ensure that services like that will be preserved whatever decision is taken.”
